On November 19, Daiwa House Industry Co., Ltd. announced the full-scale launch of the “Osaka Maru Building Reconstruction Project (tentative name). The building is scheduled to open in 2030.
Osaka Maru Building (1-9-20 Umeda, Kita-ku, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture) was established in April 1976 as Japan’s first cylindrical skyscraper. Due to the aging of the building and facilities, the decision was made to rebuild in May 2022, and demolition of the ground level portion was completed in September 2024.
The project inherits the shape and “spinning electric board” of the Osaka Maru Building. With a maximum height of 192 meters, it will be the tallest building (within a radius of approximately 700 meters, as of October 31) in the Osaka Station area, including Umekita, and will have 40 floors above ground and four floors below ground.
Utilizing the system of the “Umeda 1-chome Central District,” a special urban revitalization district, the building is expected to have, in order from the upper floors, an observation space, museum, hotel, innovation office, concert hall/stage, commercial facilities, and parking lot. As of October 31, it will have the largest number of uses for a skyscraper (a large-scale complex facility exceeding 60 meters in height) in Japan.
In terms of hotels, the project aims to attract luxury hotels and urban hotels, with a total of approximately 280 rooms under two different brands.
The Innovation Office will establish a workspace for a wide variety of people and information, and will consider providing growth support programs and community for the startups that move in.
The concert hall/stage will feature equipment that allows for changes in the size of the stage and seating, while primarily accommodating classical concerts.
As a commercial facility, the space is planned to inherit the atmosphere of the Osaka Maru Building, and will attract stores that have affinity with the facility’s use.
The building will also have a semi-outdoor under-roof space called “Piloti” on the ground level, where visitors can feel the shade of a large tree. A spherical digital atrium will be created from the second basement to the fourth floor above ground, and will be connected to the Diamor Osaka underground shopping mall.
In addition, there will be an underground passageway and ticket gates connecting to Nishi-Umeda Station on the Osaka Metro Yotsubashi Line.
