Weathernews announced snowfall trends for this winter.
Snowfall this winter is expected to be normal or above normal from Hokkaido to the San-in region. On the other hand, the Pacific side of northern to western Japan and northern Kyushu are expected to be near normal. Due to the La Niña phenomenon, westerly winds will meander southward near Japan, and cold air will tend to flow into western Japan at times.
Snow is expected to peak in the first half of January on the Sea of Japan side of northern Japan and the Pacific side of eastern Japan, from the end of January to the beginning of February on the Sea of Japan side of eastern Japan and western Japan, and in the second half of February on the Pacific side of northern Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk.
Last winter, due to the El Niño phenomenon, the winter pressure pattern did not last long, and there were periods when warm air flowed in from the south, mainly in February, resulting in very high temperatures nationwide and lower than normal snowfall nationwide. In February and early March, the Pacific side of eastern Japan and the Pacific side of northern Japan experienced heavy snowfall in some areas due to a low-pressure system. Compared to last winter, this winter is expected to bring more snowfall, especially on the Sea of Japan side.
