Ginzan Onsen (429 Ginzan Shimbata, Obanazawa, Yamagata Prefecture) will be regulating personal cars and adjusting admission during the winter period from January 7 to February 28, 2025.
The car restriction is experimental and this is the first time. 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Park-and-ride is available without entrance restriction, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Park-and-ride is available with a ticket system and limited number of people, and from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. the following day, only authorized persons are allowed to pass through the park.
Park-and-ride allows visitors to park their own cars at Taisho Romankan and transfer to a special shuttle bus (for a fee) to get to the hot spring resort. The ticket price is 1,150 yen, which includes a 600 yen transportation maintenance cooperation fee, a 500 yen bus fare, and a 50 yen cooperation fee. Also, buses departing from Oishida Station, Tendo Station, and Akakura Onsen also offer a plan that includes an admission ticket.
From December to the end of March 2025, the section of Prefectural Route 188 from the site of the Juichi Passage to Ginzan Onsen will be closed to traffic from 16:00 to 10:00 daily, and day-trippers will not be allowed to pass through. Restaurant reservation holders, ryokan lodging reservation holders, commuters, residents, vendors, emergency vehicles, etc. are exempt from the regulation.
Walking from the restricted area to the hot spring resort is prohibited due to the possibility of accidents involving human lives.
The restrictions were imposed against the backdrop of the situation in which the local staff had to carry out rescue work from early morning to late at night due to unexpected incidents that occurred as a result of unreasonable tourism plans during the winter season, problems among tourists over good places to take pictures, and the breaking of traffic rules, due to the tendency to “get by if you go there. In recent years, traffic congestion due to on-street parking has become a major cause of traffic congestion. In recent years, there have been cases where ambulances have been unable to reach the hot spring resort due to traffic congestion caused by on-street parking.
Ginzan Onsen hopes that the restrictions will prevent people from making unreasonable travel plans and encourages safe and enjoyable winter tourism, and has set up an inquiry counter for traffic restrictions.
