JR East will introduce the HB-E220 series as a new type of hybrid diesel train and begin commercial operation in the second half of FY2025.
The train consists of one-car HB-E220 and two-car HB-E221 and HB-E222 trains, each with three entrances on one side. The train cars will have long seats, free space for wheelchairs and baby carriages, and Western-style toilets for electric wheelchairs.
A diesel hybrid system will be adopted, in which the drive motor is also used as a generator during braking and charged to storage batteries for driving, and the engine will be designed to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) from the exhaust.
It will be introduced in the Takasaki and Morioka areas. In the Takasaki area, it will operate between Koraigawa Station and Takasaki Station on the Hachiko Line and Takasaki Line, and in the Morioka area between Kamaishi Station and Morioka Station on the Kamaishi Line and Tohoku Main Line.
