DeepL demonstrates DeepL Voice for real-time voice translation in Teams meetings and smartphone apps.

Posted on 2024-11-262024-12-10 by Editor in Chief

DeepL (DeepL) presented its speech translation solution, DeepL Voice, in Tokyo on November 26.

As already announced at the company’s Berlin event on March 13, DeepL Voice provides real-time translation in several different languages, online or in person, in two forms: DeepL Voice for Meetings for online meetings and DeepL Voice for Conversations for mobile devices. It is available in two forms: “DeepL Voice for Meetings” for online meetings and “DeepL Voice for Conversations” for mobile devices.

The former system allows meeting participants to select their native language and speak it, while other participants can check the translated subtitles in real time. In the latter, audio of a one-on-one face-to-face conversation is imported into a smartphone application, and translated subtitles are displayed on the device.

Since its launch in 2017, DeepL has attracted attention in Japan for its high document translation accuracy, but speech translation is different from document translation due to stuttering, slurred speech, and microphone input issues, according to the company. According to Jaroslaw Kutelowski, founder and CEO, DeepL Voice was created as a solution based on these issues from the early stages of development.

At the time of the announcement, 13 languages (English, German, Korean, Swedish, Dutch, French, Turkish, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Italian) as well as Japanese are available for voice input, and subtitles for translation and display are available in the 33 languages supported by DeepL.

DeepL Voice will be offered as a solution for relatively large corporations, such as those with 250 or more employees, and for Meetings, it currently runs on Microsoft Teams. The company is considering supporting other platforms such as Zoom in the future.

For Conversations, which runs on the DeepL app for smartphones, is also available for users who have signed a corporate contract. The company is not yet at the stage where other companies will adopt this solution and release specific products (such as PocketTalk) because there is no API for Voice yet.
