JAL, which has bases throughout Japan, has been continuously implementing regional revitalization initiatives (currently the “JAL Furusato Project”), and in August 2020 launched the “JAL Furusato Ambassadors,” cabin crew members selected through an in-house recruitment process who move to the area to promote initiatives in their respective regions. In December of the same year, JAL appointed “JAL Hometown Cheering Troops” who are involved in regional revitalization while serving on board. The aim is to develop products and solve regional issues for hometowns and other regions with which they have connections, utilizing the knowledge they have accumulated as flight attendants.
We spoke with Yoshiko Osada, a JAL Furusato Ambassador who participated in a nighttime event at Suizenji Seishuen in Kumamoto.
–What can you tell us about your initiatives?
Hello, this is Nagata, JAL Furusato Ambassador for Kumamoto Prefecture. It is getting colder day by day, and it is the season of illumination in the city.
As a JAL Furusato Ambassador, I would like to visit Kumamoto! What kind of place is Kumamoto? I am also working to energize the local community and bring smiles to people’s faces.
This time we would like to introduce “Lux Night KUMAMOTO 2024” being held at Suizenji Seishuen in Kumamoto City.
–How are you involved in this effort?
Visitors can enjoy an immersive night walk with an audio guide that traces the life of Garasha Hosokawa, the second head of the Hosokawa family and the wife of Lord Tadaoki, who lived a very strange life.
Normally, visitors can enter the park only during the daytime, but this event is a unique opportunity to enjoy a different Suizenji Seijuen at night.
–What do you recommend?
The first area I would like to recommend is “Firefly Road. It uses light to represent fireflies as if they were really there.
Next is the “Projection Mapping Area. When a person walks, a projection mapping of the six flowers of Higo (Higo camellia, Higo peony, Higo iris, Higo morning glory, Higo chrysanthemum, and Higo mountain tea flower) appears behind him or her, boasting a stunning beauty.
The stained glass projection mapping is also sigh-worthy and beautiful, and you can stay there for hours. …… is such a wonderful area.
A pleasant surprise awaits you at “Demizu Shrine,” a national scenic and historic site and one of Kumamoto’s most famous tourist attractions, located at the end of the course! When you pray with your hands together, Higo Rokka (six flowers of Higo) will appear. It is a fun way to see which of the six Higo flowers will appear (I got the morning glory)! (For me, it was the morning glory.)
In addition, please take note of the beauty of the light reflected on the surface of the water and the delicacy of the bamboo lights.
–What is your message to travelers?
This year will be the first time for this Lux Night KUMAMOTO 2024 to be held.
The life of Garasha, who had a short but dignified and beautiful life of 38 years, is expressed with “bamboo lighting” and “light art” in Suizenji Seishuen, which is closely related to the Hosokawa family.
Please come to Kumamoto to enjoy the spectacular light and nature. The festival will be held until December 8.
