ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel Nagasaki Glover Hill” Recommended by Ms. Yamaguchi

Posted on 2024-12-032024-12-17 by Editor in Chief

IHG Hotels & Resorts operates 19 hotel brands with more than 6,400 hotels in over 100 countries. In Japan, IHG Hotels & Resorts currently operates approximately 47 hotels under seven brands from Hokkaido to Okinawa (as of June 30, 2024). For this interview, we asked Norihisa Yamaguchi, general manager of the ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel Nagasaki Glover Hill, about the charms of the area surrounding the hotel.

Name: ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel Nagasaki Glover Hill

Location: 1-18 Minamiyamate-cho, Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture

–How did you come to work at the ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel Nagasaki Glover Hill?

I started my career as a hotelier when I was in college, working part-time at a hotel in Yokohama. After joining our hotel’s predecessor, the Nagasaki Tokyu Hotel, I experienced the transfer of management to the Nagasaki ANA Hotel Glover Hill and its rebranding to the current ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel Nagasaki Glover Hill in 2012, and was appointed General Manager in September 2021. I have been working with this building for more than 40 years.

–What kind of hotel is it?

Including its predecessor, Tokyu Hotel, the hotel has been in operation in this area for 50 years and has been patronized by many guests of all generations. The hotel is located in the Higashiyamate and Minamiyamate Traditional Buildings Preservation District, one of Nagasaki’s most popular sightseeing spots, just a 3-minute walk from the World Heritage sites of Oura Tenshudo and Glover Garden.

–What is the unique experience of the ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel Nagasaki Glover Hill?

In the Minamiyamate area, which used to be a foreign settlement, you can still experience the architecture from the Meiji period and the exotic atmosphere unique to Nagasaki. In the evening, the bells of the Oura Tenshudo Temple and the bells of the neighboring temples echo in unison, creating a “soundscape” that is definitely worth experiencing. Please enjoy the beautiful scenery of Nagasaki, which has often appeared in movies and TV dramas.

–please let me know if you have any personal favorites tourist spots or restaurants in the vicinity of the hotel.

It is very difficult to narrow down the recommended spots in Nagasaki, but one cannot miss the night view sightseeing, which is recognized as one of the “World’s New Three Great Night Views”. While the famous night view from Mt. Inasa is attractive, we recommend the view from Nabekanmuriyama Park, which is at a lower elevation than Mt. The jewel-like night view from Nabekanmuriyama, which is lower in elevation than Mount Inasa, is so breathtaking that you will feel as if you could scoop it out with both hands.

–What restaurant menu do you recommend?

In the dining area of “Restaurant Pavé,” guests can enjoy a course meal featuring Nagasaki’s mountain and sea delicacies while overlooking the ships passing by in the harbor. In addition, “Healthy Champon” and “Healthy Sara Udon”, local gourmet dishes made without animal products such as meat and seafood, are popular among those with dietary restrictions.

–What souvenirs do you recommend?

Although “Castella” is unwaveringly popular as a Nagasaki souvenir at various stores in town, I recommend “Momo Castella” (peach sponge cake). Momo Castella is a sponge cake made of sponge cake dough topped with sugar candy in the shape of a peach, a symbol of good luck. Once given as a congratulatory return gift for a girl’s first Doll’s Festival, it is now also popular as a special festive gift, regardless of the season.
