JR East to operate all-night service on 7 lines in the Tokyo metropolitan area from New Year’s Eve to New Year’s Day. Shinkansen also operates extra trains.

East Japan Railway Company (JR East) announced the extra trains that will operate between December 1, 2024 and February 28, 2025.

From New Year’s Eve to New Year’s Day, seven lines (Yamanote Line, Keihin-Tohoku/Negishi Line, Chuo/Sobu Line local trains, Chuo Line rapid trains, Yokosuka Line, Ome Line, Sobu Line and Narita Line) will operate all night long. The all-night operation times will be reflected in the digital JR timetable and route searches on JR East applications after December 6.

The Tohoku Shinkansen, Akita Shinkansen, Yamagata Shinkansen, Joetsu Shinkansen, and Hokuriku Shinkansen will also operate extra trains from December 27 to January 5, 2025, to coincide with year-end and New Year’s trips home.

In addition, the express trains for Hatsumode (New Year’s visit to a shrine) and Hatsuhinode (New Year’s sunrise) viewing will also be operated, including a limited express train to Narita-san, a rapid train between Hiraizumi and Sendai, a “Fuji Kairo” limited express running in the Mt. Fuji and Kawaguchiko areas, and a limited express to Inubosaki.

Other special trains will operate during the year-end and New Year holidays and three consecutive holidays, a special train to the GALA Yuzawa ski resort scheduled to open on December 13, and special trains to Tohoku, Hokuriku, Izu area, Hakuba area, etc. for winter travel.
