JR East has applied to the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism for fare revision in March 2026. As a result, the starting fare will be 160 yen instead of the current 150 yen; for IC card users, the current fare will be plus 8 yen for trunk lines and local transportation lines, and plus 9 yen for specified sections of trains and within the Yamanote Line.
The application was made in response to changes in the business environment, such as changing lifestyles, high prices and human resources, maintaining and improving safety and service, updating vehicles and equipment, expanding barrier-free facilities and countermeasures against increasingly severe disasters.
The overall revision rate (price increase rate) was 7.1%. The breakdown is 7.8% for regular fares, 12.0% for commuter commuter commuter passes, and 4.9% for school commuter passes. With the fare revision, the fare categories for specified sections of trains and fares within the Yamanote Line will be integrated into the trunk line category.
Ordinary fares will increase by 4.4% on trunk lines, 5.2% on local transit lines, 10.4% on train specific sections, and 16.4% on the Yamanote Line. As a result, fares from Tokyo Station to Shinjuku Station will increase from 210 yen to 260 yen, from Tokyo Station to Yokohama Station from 490 yen to 530 yen, and from Tokyo Station to Omiya Station from 580 yen to 620 yen.
Commuter passes will be increased by 7.2% on trunk lines, 10.1% on local transit lines, 13.3% on specified sections of trains, and 22.9% on the Yamanote Line, reflecting the equivalent revision of regular fares. The revised commuter fares will be ¥17,970 from ¥16,610 for Tokyo Station to Omiya Station, ¥18,720 from ¥17,310 for Tokyo Station to Kashiwa Station, and ¥24,880 from ¥22,890 for Tokyo Station to Hachioji Station.
For 6-month commuter passes, the discount rate for regular fares will be revised by up to approximately 5%. For example, the average discount rate for a trunk line 6-month commuter pass will be reduced from 60.3% to 59.0%.
In consideration of the burden on households, commuter pass fares for trunk lines and local transit lines will remain unchanged. However, fares will be raised for specified sections of trains and on the Yamanote Line. The rate of increase will be 8% for specified sections of trains and 16.8% for the Yamanote Line.
As for limited express, the fares will remain unchanged before and after the revision, but the fares will be revised. As a result, the fare from Tokyo Station to Utsunomiya Station will increase from 5,020 yen to 5,130 yen, and from Tokyo Station to Sendai Station from 11,410 yen to 11,630 yen.
In addition, after the fare revision, the Tokaido Shinkansen and Tokaido Line will be treated as separate lines between Tokyo Station and Atami Station, and regular tickets will be sold separately. The price of commuter passes will be increased, but there will be no change in the way they are handled.
