Established in 2013, the Kyoto University Graduate School of Integrated Ars Vivendi (also known as Shishukan) is a five-year, integrated doctoral program that aims to develop global human resources. It aims to create academic studies that transcend the boundaries between the humanities and sciences to pioneer the survival and future of humans and industrial and social systems, and to address global and complex issues with a fusion of humanities and sciences approach that lies between conventional academic research and the practical work required by society.
JICA’s Chief Digital Officer (CDO), Mr. Hitotsugu Tojima, was invited to the International Education Seminar, which is held three times a year as a required course for Gakkan students, to give a lecture in English3 on the overview of international cooperation by Japan and JICA and the Digital Transformation (DX) that JICA is promoting to approximately 60 participants, mostly Gakkan students. He gave a lecture3 in English to about 60 participants, mainly Gakkan students.

3 Since Sogo Ars Vivendi aims to nurture global human resources and has a large number of international students from abroad, many lectures are conducted in English.
After opening remarks by Professor Koji Makino of the Ars Vivendi, CDO Teshima gave a one-hour lecture on (1) the significance of Japan’s international cooperation and JICA’s overview, (2) what digitalization and DX are, (3) JICA’s “DX Vision “4 and “Promotion of Digitalization “5 in its “Global Agenda” (issue-specific strategies), and (4) JICA’s DX (4) JICA’s challenges and future direction in DX.
(Abstract of speech)
A lively question-and-answer session followed the lecture, which lasted 30 minutes. For example, as an example of DX’s contribution to wellbeing, he introduced a maternal and child health handbook that was useful for polio vaccinations for children in conflict zones in Palestine this fall and its digitization. There were also discussions on the importance of addressing downside risks (e.g., digital divide, cyber-attacks, etc.) and the need for regulations and safeguards for the use of generative AI.
In an international society where interdependence is increasing and multiple crises are continuing, JICA hopes to provide university and graduate students, who are the future leaders of Japan and the world, with opportunities to deepen their understanding of development cooperation conducted by Japan and JICA, and the promotion of digitalization and DX within that cooperation, and to develop interest in the efforts of developing countries and the international community, including Japan. JICA will continue to actively utilize these opportunities for seminars and lectures in the future.
