Dates: November 10 (Sun.), 11 (Mon.), 13 (Wed.), 2024

Organized by JICA

Location: Republic of Iraq

10th: Iraq National Museum

11th: University of Baghdad

13th: Ministry of Home Affairs and Tourism, Kurdistan Regional Government

Main Participants

Yuji Kurihara, Deputy Director, National Museum of Nature and Science

Background and Objectives

In Iraq, art galleries and museums are positioned as centers for education and cultural and historical understanding, but are not utilized as tourism resources, and there are calls for the utilization of Japanese knowledge. In order to respond to these expectations, we asked Dr. Kurihara, who is well versed in museology, to give a lecture.

Contents

Yuji Kurihara, Deputy Director of the National Science Museum, gave a lecture titled “The Potential of Museums” to the Iraqi National Museum on November 10, the Faculty of Letters of the University of Baghdad on November 11, and the Ministry of Local Government and Tourism of the Kurdistan Regional Government on November 13.

In addition to the Iraqi National Museum, Dr. Kurihara visited and inspected archaeological sites such as the Erbil Museum, the Iraqi Institute for the Conservation of Antiquities, and the Sulemani Museum.

Iraq, known as the cradle of civilization, has many globally important heritage sites originating from ancient Mesopotamia. On the other hand, Iraq’s domestic industry is dominated by the oil industry, and many of the country’s important heritage sites are not being effectively utilized as tourism resources.

In this context, JICA Iraq Office invited Dr. Kurihara as a special lecturer for the “JICA Chair” to share his knowledge and perspectives on museum management in Japan and other countries.
