Rakuten Travel has released “Rakuten Travel 2024 Annual Ranking of Popular Hot Spring Destinations.
The number of person-nights (number of guests x number of nights) in 2024 among domestic accommodation facilities registered on Rakuten Travel.
The top 20 are published, with Atami Hot Springs in Shizuoka Prefecture in first place and Beppu Hot Springs in Oita Prefecture in second place. Both have been ranked for 11 consecutive years.
The No. 1 hot spring resort, Atami Onsen, has seen a series of accommodations and restaurants opened or renovated in recent years. The number of visitors is said to be large for two men and two women or with children, and the share of visitors in their 20s or younger is also large.
In Beppu Onsen, which ranked second, several lodging facilities underwent large-scale renovations this year, and the number of nights booked by foreign visitors to Japan increased 1.4 times over the previous year, attracting attention both domestically and internationally.
Nasu Onsen (Tochigi Prefecture), in third place, saw an increase in sightseeing spot options due to the renewal of the roadside station and other factors. The survey revealed the largest increase in use by families with children compared to the previous year, and the number of family visitors continues to grow.
The overall ranking is as follows. Yunokawa Onsen and Yufuin Onsen were awarded from outside the previous year’s ranking.
