And sightseeing in Ho Chi Minh City
After visiting Phu Quoc on a Vietnam Airlines inspection tour and enjoying the resort atmosphere, I enjoyed sightseeing in Ho Chi Minh City. Located in southern Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City is the economic center of the country. Due to the influence of French colonial rule, many colonial buildings can be seen in the city.
The “pink church” famous as a tourist’s Instagram spot is the Tanding Church, built in 1876 during the French colonial period, and has an atmosphere that makes you want to take pictures.
The building that is a symbol of colonial architecture is the Saigon Central Post Office. While functioning as a post office, it is also open to the public, so its Western-inspired interior and exterior are a must-see. The arched ceiling like that of a train station is a distinctive feature, and a portrait of Ho Chi Minh, the founding father of Vietnam, hangs proudly on the back wall of the front building.
The Saigon Grand Church, located in front of the Saigon Central Post Office, could not be seen in its entirety due to repair work on the exterior, but the garden with a statue of the Virgin Mary was very beautiful with many flowers in bloom. The Ho Chi Minh Book Street next to the Saigon Central Post Office is like Jimbocho in Japan, with many bookstores.
Ben Thanh Market is a must-see tourist attraction in Ho Chi Minh City. The market is lined with many stalls selling a wide variety of goods, including clothing, handicrafts, souvenirs, and gourmet foods, making it an enjoyable place to visit even if you do not have a shopping goal. The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Building is also a must-see. Originally built in 1908 as a public hall for French expatriates, it is now used as a government building. Although it is not open to visitors since it is used as a government building, the bronze statue of Ho Chi Minh in front of the building makes for a great photo opportunity.
