The purpose of this event is to discuss innovative methods to increase community resilience to climate change in Kenya and achieve NDC (nationally determined contributions) at different sectoral and sub-national levels, including (1) practical methods of agroforestry in rural areas and (2) local level This is to be introduced by means of a green finance evaluation and proposed strategies to use it.

Contents

In his opening remarks, Mr. Tals, Director of the Forest Conservation Bureau, stated that activities to achieve the national goal of growing 15 billion trees through landscape conservation and ecosystem restoration are essential in achieving the NDC goal, and that the promotion of agroforestry, which accounts for 30% of the afforestation goal, is very important. He shared that green finance initiatives, including the use of carbon markets such as emissions trading, are also necessary to achieve this goal.

The Director-General of the Main Bureau of Finance and Economics of the Ministry of Finance continued by asserting that the NDC target can be achieved by addressing climate change adaptation and mitigation measures in rural areas, adopting innovative green finance such as green bonds and promotion of carbon market transactions, and implementing poverty reduction and other livelihood improvement measures.

The Director of Agroforestry at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change then gave an overview of the various activities to be presented at the event. In addition, the Director of Agusto & Co East Africa gave a presentation, reviewing findings from county green finance assessments in 10 pilot counties in Kenya and suggesting strategies to strengthen them.

During the panel discussion, JICA expert Inoue showed a video of the School Feeding and Nurturing Forest Club Forest Carbon Pilot Project in the semi-arid region of Kenya. The project utilized the results of previous breeding of useful tree species in semi-arid areas of Kenya, and showed how agroforestry has improved the nutritional status of children and provided incentives. Swedish NGO Vie Agroforestry was introduced as a company that has obtained agroforestry credits in the voluntary carbon market and is promoting gender-sensitive projects, and PricewaterhouseCoopers is providing appropriate green financing for the project. He also presented a presentation on the company’s efforts to promote gender-sensitive projects in the voluntary carbon market.
