Background and Objectives

In order to expand synergies among Member States in the implementation of their environmental treaty obligations, as stipulated in last year’s UNEA resolution, and to collect and share good practices for a better understanding of synergies, the results of the analysis of good practices of synergies, and the concept and progress of activities to be included in NDCs and NBSAP under the CNCP will be presented, especially To increase momentum for incorporating synergies in Asia Pacific.

In his opening remarks, Environment Minister Asao explained the need to strengthen the linkages between climate change, biodiversity, and environmental pollution in order to promote the synergies of the UNEA resolution.

The UNEP Executive Director explained that while there are many UNEP-driven environmental issues, it is essential to aim for synergy between climate change and other issues, and that this is an effective approach.

Peru and Chile, which endorse the UNEA Synergy Resolution, explained the need to promote synergies, UNESCAP introduced its efforts to prepare a synergy report for Asia, and ADB introduced the strong mutual relationship between climate change measures and biodiversity, and the synergy approach is ADB introduced the need for a synergy approach in the Asian region as well.

JICA introduced that there is a strong relationship between co-benefit type climate change measures and synergies, that in addition to synergies, trade-offs are also taken into consideration, and that a matrix is created and referenced to look at projects. He explained that the matrix will be used in new projects in Peru and Indonesia.

IGES introduced that it is collecting and publishing examples of synergies and will continue to support the promotion of this initiative.
