At the request of the Government of the Republic of Vanuatu, JICA has decided to provide support for disaster medical information management in response to the damage caused by the earthquake that struck off the west coast of Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, and started on March 21. As part of the support, JICA has decided to dispatch a support team to the area.

Disaster Situation
At 10:47 a.m. Japan time (12:47 a.m. local time) on December 17, an earthquake occurred approximately 30 km west of Port Vila, the capital of the Republic of Vanuatu. The following is a summary of the damage to date.

Deaths: 12
Injured 210 persons
Affected people: approx. 80,000
Evacuees: approx. 1,698
Dispatch of the International Emergency Relief Team secretariat survey team
In response to a request from the Government of the Republic of Vanuatu, the JICA International Emergency Relief Team Secretariat decided to provide support for disaster medical information management, and began providing remote support from Japan on December 21. A support team will be dispatched to the site to provide direct support.
The support team is outlined below.
(1) The team consists of three doctors registered with the JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) medical team and one from the JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency Secretariat).
(2) The team will depart Narita Airport for Port Vila by Fiji Airways and Qantas Airways on December 25 (Wed) and 26 (Thu), respectively.
