Mongolia Open Innovation and Co-Creation for SDGs (MICS) 2024” was held in Khanbogd, South Gobi Province on December 11, 2024. MICS is a program that supports a wide range of stakeholders in industry, government, academia, and finance in Japan and Mongolia to bring together technologies, ideas, and funds to co-create and collaborate on innovative solutions to solve social issues and achieve the SDGs in both countries.
MICS in Khanbogd is co-sponsored by the Oyu Tolgoi Catalyst Fund for Khanbogd Development (OTCF), which is implementing the development of the Khanbogd region near Oyu Tolgoi, Mongolia’s largest mine, and is working with 10 selected MICS 2024 collaborative The project aims to collaborate with stakeholders in the region and the 10 projects selected for MICS2024. Two collaborative projects, “Establishment of Mini Plant Factories in Schools for Sustainable Agriculture and Nutritional Enhancement” and “Production and Sales of Pet Supplies” presented their proposals for business development in the region. Networking was conducted with approximately 45 participants who visited the venue. The next day, the participants visited financial institutions, agricultural and livestock cooperatives, educational institutions, and other organizations in the region that had expressed interest in the project, to match them with specific collaboration opportunities.
The event introduced JICA projects related to the region’s economy and development. A participant who runs a livestock business said, “It was a good opportunity to know that JICA was cooperating in this way as well as education and welfare throughout Mongolia. I would like to work with the MICS project while taking advantage of the unique characteristics of Khan Bogd.” They expressed their opinions.
On the following day, December 12, JICA Mongolia Office Director Miyagi visited the Oyu Tolgoi mine to inspect the underground coal mine, a repair shop for drilling equipment, and residential facilities for staff working at the mine, etc. JICA and OTCF will continue to work together to improve the lives of staff working at the mine and local residents in order to develop the local economy of the Khan Bogd region and improve social services. JICA and OTCF will continue to collaborate in order to improve the lives of mine workers and local residents, as well as the local economy and social services in the Hahn Bogd area.
Finally, the final event of MICS2024 will be held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on February 7, 2025. (More information will be released in December.)
