On December 27, JICA decided to dispatch a survey mission to the Republic of Vanuatu to provide rapid rehabilitation and reconstruction assistance in response to the damage caused by the earthquake that struck the country.
The earthquake that struck off the west coast of Port Vila, the country’s capital, on December 17 (Japan Standard Time), affected about 80,000 people, killing 12 and injuring more than 200 (according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as of December 23).
On the 25th and 26th, JICA dispatched a support team consisting of doctors to the Ministry of Health of Vanuatu to provide medical care to the victims and to the government of Vanuatu. The team has been providing medical care to the affected people.
Following this, on the 27th we decided to dispatch a survey team to assist in post-disaster recovery and reconstruction. The team will depart in early January 2025 and will be on site to survey the damage to transportation infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and ports, as well as social infrastructure such as hospitals, with the aim of considering future support measures.
Through this survey, JICA will consider reconstruction assistance to realize Build Back Better in the country.
