After lunch, it was time for dessert! So we left Ice Cream Restaurant Elvis in the winter and decided to go somewhere to have a cup of coffee. Blue Seal ice cream used to be available only in Okinawa, but now it is available in Kanto as well. It brings back memories of eating Blue Seal ice cream on my first school trip to Okinawa. The café offers coffee, tea, and other beverages, as well as many other specials in addition to ice cream. I ordered “California Apple Pie a la mode” with vanilla ice cream, “Taro Cheesecake” and the classic “Chocolate” flavor ice cream. Ice cream on a cold day is a great treat, isn’t it? The warmed apple pie and vanilla ice cream were a perfect match, and when the slightly melted parts of the ice cream were combined with the California apple pie, it created a creamy sauce that filled my mouth with happiness. The bittersweet coffee warms you up while you enjoy the cold food. What a luxurious way to eat! The development of civilization is a wonderful thing, isn’t it?
Longing to visit “Wildcat Ken” in Echigo! Ambient jazz live music with free jazz elements After enjoying delicious sweets at the Blue Seal Cafe, we came to the gallery and cafe “Wildcat Ken,” which was our main destination. The owner is a music and sound designer who also runs a label. The owner of the store, who is surrounded by the sea and has a high humidity in Japan, searched for a dry place where musical instruments would sound well and opened the store here in Echigo. The shop is called “Sannekeken,” and it has the atmosphere of a music space in a mountain villa, with an open atrium and a wonderful sense of spaciousness. The atrium is very comfortable, so we chose to sit upstairs. We had eaten sweets earlier, but the pizza looked good, so we ordered the Vegetable and Salami Pizza and the Rum Cake. I thought it would be cold at the mountain lodge in winter. I thought it would be cold in the winter, but it was so hot on the second floor with a wood stove! I ordered an iced coffee, even though I am a cold person. The coffee was well-dripped, and the pizza, made from spring water, was delicious with a crunchy crust! The rum cake was moist and the rum flavor matched the coffee, perfect for the evening concert. Ayuko, the vocalist of the night, is a member of the same office and we became very good friends since we are the same age. She mainly sings jazz, but she is also a former taiko drummer with a good sense of rhythm and is willing to improvise in a free jazz style. On this day, she performed as a trio with Kazumi Ikenaga, a world-renowned drummer, and Falcon on guitar. They performed Christmas songs and other songs with some parts of improvisation, including their own original compositions. However, the songs were not straightforward, including a Canadian Christmas song by Ayuko, who has studied in Canada, and “Jingle Bells,” a five-beat song reminiscent of the famous jazz standard “Take Five. Falcon’s original music was spellbinding or ritualistic and intense, but also contained ambient elements, inviting the audience into a different space. It was a strange experience to listen to a live performance, which is quite popular with the connoisseurs, in a mountain villa deep in the mountains in winter. The live performance on this day was like a trip to such a different world, and it seemed to project the mental landscape of each listener. At the end of the concert, we had a chat with everyone and enjoyed a friendly and pleasant time.
