JALPAC’s new initiative, “Travel Academy,” is designed as a “local experience program of travel and learning, where you can find hints for your life from rich lifestyles in Japan and overseas. In this issue, we report on a field trip to Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture, to learn from the city’s case study, “Introduction to ‘Local Side Business’ to Make the Most of Your Life in the Community: Creating Another Place to Live and Another Role to Play. Mitoyo City in Kagawa Prefecture, which was reported in the previous lecture, is a hot area where various measures to revitalize the community have been successful, and the number of new residents and tourist spots have been developed one after another. The lecturers of the lecture, Mr. Hima Furuta, Representative Director of Umari, Ms. Kanako Harada, Representative Director of Setouchi Works, and Mr. Koki Miura, Representative Director of KOKI BREWING MITOYO, accompanied the tour as commentators.
Chabogahama Beach, which has regained its beauty through the power of mutual aid. Chabogahama Beach was once covered in trash, but has been beautifully restored through a cleanup initiated by seven volunteers. As a result of the town-wide cleanup efforts, the beach has become a tourist attraction, even being called the “Salar de Uyuni in the Seto Inland Sea,” visited by more than 500,000 people a year. At first, it was just a spot for taking pictures, but now young local business owners have begun to use the beach as a tourist resource by opening stores in the area.
Opening a Brewery While Working as a Company Employee Mr. Kouki Miura, a Tokyo native, launched “Minna de Brewery” while working in corporate finance. With the introduction of remote work at his company, he decided to wear two hats, one as a company employee and the other as a brewery owner. Since it is a brewery, he has invested several million yen in brewing equipment and store interior, but even so, the rent is overwhelmingly inexpensive, making it less expensive than opening a business in an urban area. The realization of the project came about thanks to his own desire and the support of the people around him to have a place where he could casually drink his favorite beer in Mitutoyo City, which he fell in love with above all. In addition to the beer bar as a communication space, he would like to make use of the vacant second floor to turn it into a hands-on inn, where guests can stay only if they help brewing beer.
