ETA registration for non-European subjects (including Japan) will be mandatory on or after January 8, and for European subjects on or after April 2, while ETA registration for Japanese nationals will be accepted from November 27, 2024.
The UK government will require all travelers who currently do not require a visa for entry to obtain an ETA from April 2025.
Travelers requiring ETA registration
For travel, visiting relatives, business, study abroad, etc. for 6 months or less
In the case of a stay under Creative Worker visa concession for less than 3 months
In the case of a stay in Japan with a paid engagement
If you are making a connection in the U.K. (even if you are not entering the U.K.)
The application fee for an ETA is 10 pounds (about 2000 yen), and the examination time is within 3 working days in the UK. Payment can be made by credit card, debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. An approved ETA is valid for two years, and there is no limit to the number of times you can enter the country. When the passport expires, the applicant must reapply for an ETA for renewal or new acquisition.
In addition, even if you obtain an ETA, immigration inspection is mandatory upon arrival.
