New Year’s Message: JTB President Eijiro Yamakita

Posted on 2025-01-062025-02-06 by Editor in Chief

With the knowledge and experience gained over the journey, “A New Future Beyond the Crossroads. to

JTB Corporation

Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer

Eijiro Yamakita

With the New Year, I would like to extend my best wishes for a Happy New Year.

Last year, many of you were moved by the excitement brought about by sports, such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, which saw a rush of medals from Japan’s national team, and the success of Otani in the Major League Baseball in the United States. The number of foreign visitors to Japan reached a record high, and major sightseeing spots in Japan were crowded with tourists from home and abroad. In terms of sustainability, we are proud to have been accredited by Bureau Veritas (headquartered in France), one of the third-party international certification organizations accredited by The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (hereinafter “GSTC”), which sets and manages international standards for sustainable travel and tourism. We received GSTC Tour Operator Certification for our domestic tours from Bureau Veritas (headquartered in France). This certification is the result of an objective evaluation of our current efforts, and we consider this certification to be very valuable.

Now, according to the IMF World Economic Outlook, the overall global GDP growth rate will be higher than last year, and we see global exchange continuing to grow this year. This year, under the theme of “Creating the Present from the Future,” we will continue to co-create with various stakeholders and evolve our business model in order to contribute to the enhancement of customer’s actual value and sustainable development of the region through the creation of exchanges. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the JTB timetable, which was first published as the “Train Timetable,” and the Osaka-Kansai Expo will finally open in April. The number of visitors from Japan and abroad is expected to increase as they come to Osaka for various purposes, including tourism, education, culture, sports, academics, and business. We will continue to uncover and refine local tourism resources, increase travel consumption in response to overtourism issues in some regions, attract visitors to local regions, and accelerate the creation of sustainable regions. Global passenger volume is expected to reach 9.5 billion, up 10% from the previous year. Global human flow is also expected to grow remarkably, and we will contribute to the improvement of customer engagement through corporate events and international conferences, while staying close to the problem-solving process of our customers around the world. In addition, as MLB’s international popularity grows, we will provide “hospitality packages” for the World Tour, including the Tokyo Series, to fans around the world outside the U.S. as an official partner of the MLB World Tour so that fans in various countries outside the U.S. can enjoy watching baseball games.

JTB’s business domain is “Exchange Creation. By leveraging the power of people on a digital foundation, co-creating value for regions and organizations, and creating people flow, information flow, and logistics, we will continue to sustainably create encounters and empathy between people, people and regions, and people and organizations, thereby enhancing the value felt by our customers. We will strengthen our human capital based on compliance and DEIB so that our employees, who play a key role in this process, can fully demonstrate their abilities.

A new future beyond the intersection of the two. Since its founding in 1912, JTB has been creating moments that move people’s hearts through travel. I would like to start this New Year’s greeting with a promise that we will continue to strive for the development of a sustainable society through the “creation of exchange” that only we can provide, based on the knowledge and experience we have cultivated beyond the travel routes.
