JTB and Airbnb collaborate on development of lodging facilities and experience programs through utilization of vacant houses.

Posted on 2025-01-222025-02-27 by Editor in Chief

JTB and Airbnb Japan announced on January 22 that they have signed a collaboration agreement.

The project aims to promote the development of a welcoming environment for tourism promotion through the utilization of vacant houses in areas where the population is declining, and through this initiative, “exchange creation projects” centered on the community will be promoted to support the development of the entire community.

While there are currently more than 8 million vacant houses in Japan, there is also a shortage of accommodations and skyrocketing prices during times when tourism demand is concentrated due to seasonal and event periods. In addition to solving these local problems, the two companies’ efforts are also aimed at revitalizing communities and creating new economic opportunities.

Specific activities will include the development of experience-based tourism programs utilizing local resources based on the skills and know-how of both companies, the creation of new tourism models by re-evaluating resources, the implementation of workshops for local residents and related parties to solve problems, and the creation of an environment for hosting home sharing. The project will also develop a new tourism model by re-evaluating the resources, conduct workshops for local residents and related parties to solve problems, and create an environment to host home sharing.

The company aims to develop initiatives based on this agreement in 100 regions throughout Japan by 2028, with particular emphasis on eastern Japan, where it aims to create a “home-sharing movement” to revitalize the region, create jobs, and promote immigration.
