On January 23, the Tokyo head office of the Yomiuri Shimbun, the Yomiuri Giants, and Yomiuri Land held a groundbreaking ceremony for the aquarium in the “TOKYO GIANTS TOWN” joint development project. The aquarium is scheduled to open in 2027.
The aquarium will be attached to the Giants Town Stadium, which will open on March 1 in an area adjacent to the Yomiuri Land Amusement Park (4015-1 Yanoguchi, Inagi City, Tokyo). It will be the first aquarium integrated with a baseball stadium in Japan, offering a variety of fun activities in Tokyo Giants Town.
The facility has one basement floor and three stories above ground, with an area of 9,874 m2 including outdoor exhibits. It will feature a large 1,300-ton water tank, one of the largest in the Kanto area, as well as “Tama River Area,” “Jellyfish Area,” “Sea lion and penguin area,” and other full-scale exhibits that tell the story of each habitat environment from Tama River to ocean, from shallow water to deep sea. It is expected to take about one and a half to two hours to tour the entire exhibit.
The large tank is designed to allow visitors to walk through a 360-degree skeleton underwater corridor to view colorful fish swimming in the beautiful coral reef sea, providing an immersive experience as if they were walking in the deep sea.
The “Sea lion paradise” in the sea lion and penguin area allows visitors to view the leisurely lives of sea lions that have migrated from the Yomiuri Land amusement park, while the “Deep sea and ancient area” exhibits a specimen of a coelacanth, donated by the French government in 1967 and the first to be exhibited in Japan, is another highlight. The “Deep Sea and Prehistoric Area” exhibits a specimen of coelacanth, which was donated by the French government in 1967 and was the first coelacanth to be exhibited in Japan.
The aquarium will be accessible from the outfield bleachers of the stadium through a concourse so that visitors can tour Giants Town in an integrated manner, and the dedicated parking lot and food and beverage facilities will be connected by a pedestrian bridge.
In addition, the aquarium is planned to have an exhibition hall where visitors can learn about the ecosystem of the Tama River in cooperation with local schools, and a planning exhibition hall where various events will be held throughout the year. Juichi Yamaguchi, representative director of Yomiuri Shimbun Group Inc. said, “When completed, the aquarium will be the core facility of Tokyo Giants Town.” He added, “By constructing the baseball stadium and aquarium in an integrated manner, we hope that many people will feel that the aquarium is a place they would like to visit.
