Imperial Hotel Kyoto has decided on the official name of its new hotel in Kyoto, which is scheduled to open in the spring of 2026. The project is to partially preserve and utilize the building as a lodging facility, and is located on the grounds of the Gion Koubu Utamai Nerijo (south side of Gion-cho, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture).

This will be the fourth hotel under the Imperial Hotel brand, following Tokyo, Kamikochi, and Osaka, and the first new Imperial Hotel to open in 30 years since the opening of Imperial Hotel Osaka in 1996.

The company held a presentation at the Imperial Hotel Tokyo on January 29, where Reiko Sakata, Director of the Kyoto Opening Preparation Office of the Project Promotion Department, and others explained the concept and outline of the hotel. Masasuke Inoue, the architect from Obayashi Corporation, who was in charge of the hotel construction and was also involved in the completion of the Yaeikaikan at the time, attended the event and spoke about the technical details of the difficult construction work and the desire to pass on the valuable exterior and design of the Yaeikan to future generations.

Due to the aging of the building and earthquake resistance issues, the majority of the building, including the theater, which was originally intended for this purpose, is no longer in use. However, by preserving the exterior walls and structure, preserving and reusing the exterior tiles and terra cotta, and restoring the copper sheet roof and decorative metalwork, the scenery of approximately 90 years ago will be revived, and the hotel will be transformed to meet modern needs. The hotel will be restored to meet the needs of the modern era.

The concept is “Kai is a stage for relaxation. The concept is a combination of “Kyoto’s legacy” and “the best hospitality of a traditional Japanese hotel,” and is meant to be a place where you can spend a unique time.

The site area is 3623.17 m2, with two basement floors and seven stories above ground, and will include a total of 55 guest rooms, restaurants, bars, and wellness facilities (spa, swimming pool, and fitness gym). The total project cost (estimate) is expected to be approximately 12.4 billion yen.

The room types, ranks, and rates, as well as personnel such as the general manager and head chef, specific opening date, and reservation start schedule, are currently being worked out and will be announced at a later date.
