Tsukuba Express (TX) will begin a demonstration experiment of a credit card touch-payment boarding service at five stations on the Tsukuba Express Line in the summer of 2025.
The verification experiment will be conducted at Akihabara, Asakusa, Kita-Senju, Nagareyama Otakanomori, and Tsukuba stations, and will be expanded to all 20 stations on the line in spring 2026.
The system will also be transitioned to tickets utilizing QR codes, with the aim of eliminating magnetic tickets and putting QR tickets into full operation in the fall of 2026. Since the system will be introduced while replacing the ticket gate machines at each station, magnetic tickets will no longer be available in some corridors at stations from the spring of 2025.
The current magnetic tickets contain metal in the paper, which imposes an environmental burden when recycled, and the complexity and high level of expertise of the ticket checkers and ticket vending machines that support magnetic tickets are a burden. The company aims to provide sustainable railroad services by gradually shifting to QR tickets, which are made of easily recyclable materials and are easy to maintain.
