On January 29, Weathernews released its “Second Cherry Blossom Bloom Forecast.
In 2025, cherry blossoms are expected to bloom on par with or slightly earlier than normal in western and eastern Japan, earlier than normal in northern Japan, and about one week earlier in Hokkaido. The earliest bloom is expected in Tokyo on March 21, followed by Fukuoka, Kochi, Hiroshima, and Yokohama on March 22, and blooming is expected to continue in western and eastern Japan through late March.
The first half of this winter season was marked by intermittent winter pressure patterns and cold weather, which is believed to have broken the dormancy of cherry blossom buds in many areas. The dormancy breakthrough is expected to have progressed even in the Kinki and Kyushu regions, where it was expected to be sluggish.
March temperatures are expected to be near normal in Kyushu, Shikoku and Kinki, and slightly higher to above normal in Chugoku and eastern Japan, but the blooming of cherry blossoms is expected to be near normal in many areas due to many cloudy days in mid-March, which is expected to stall the growth of cherry trees. April temperatures are expected to be above normal in northern Japan, with some days affected by cold air. However, the blooming of cherry blossoms is expected to be earlier than normal due to more sunny days.
