JAL, which has bases throughout Japan, has been continuously implementing regional revitalization initiatives (currently the “JAL Furusato Project”), and in August 2020 launched the “JAL Furusato Ambassadors,” cabin crew members selected through an in-house recruitment process who move to the area to promote initiatives in their respective regions. In December of the same year, JAL appointed “JAL Hometown Cheering Troops” who are involved in regional revitalization while serving on board. The aim is to develop products and solve regional issues for hometowns and other regions with which they have connections, utilizing the knowledge they have accumulated as flight attendants.
We spoke with Momoko Nobusue, a JAL Furusato Ambassador who is involved in promoting Fukuoka’s attractiveness at the Kyushu Branch Office.
–What can you tell us about your initiatives?
Hello everyone.
In this issue, we will introduce “Munakata RunRun Otoku Tabi” held in Munakata City, Fukuoka Prefecture, as well as Munakata’s sightseeing spots and the Munakata Ground Fish Chazuke Festival.
Munakata RunRun Otoku Tabi” is a campaign that started on November 1, 2024 and will run until February 28, 2012, offering a 2,000 yen discount at lodging facilities or a 2,000 yen discount on purchases at participating facilities in Munakata City. This is a special campaign.
We are pleased to introduce you to some of our most popular fairs and recommended attractions that you may want to visit to take advantage of our special offers.
–What are some of the best places to visit in Munakata?
Here are two recommended spots in Munakata: The first is Munakata Taisha, which was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2017. It is one of the oldest shrines in Japan that appears in Japanese mythology and is one of the most famous shrines in Fukuoka, attracting many worshippers during the New Year.
The second recommended spot is “Michi no Eki (Roadside Station) Koromata. The roadside station is very popular for its wide selection of fresh seafood, agricultural products, sweets, processed foods, and other goods, and is crowded with people every day. It was voted the best roadside station in Kyushu and Okinawa for three consecutive years in the “Ichi-Oshi Michi no Eki Grand Prix 2023,” and was the first roadside station to be inducted into the Michi no Eki Hall of Fame.
–About other events that are being conducted.
Munakata Local Fish Chazuke Festival “Only Now! Only here! Chazuke with cold yellowtail” is also being held.
This is a very popular event where visitors can enjoy seasonal seafood in Munakata’s local cuisine, chazuke. The mainstay of the winter season, “Kanburi” (cold yellowtail), is characterized by its tight flesh and full of flavor, despite the fact that it is fatty and has many fine lines all the way down its back.
–What is your message to travelers?
Did we convey the charm of Munakata City?
Munakata City is surrounded by rich nature that makes it hard to believe that it is only 30 minutes from the center of Fukuoka City. Munakata City has many attractions such as the World Heritage Site “Okinoshima Island, Munakata and related heritage sites”, nature including ocean, mountains, forests, and delicious seafood and mountain products. We hope you will take advantage of the “Munakata RunRun Otoku Tabi” and visit Munakata City, a city of food and World Heritage sites.
