On January 29, the Japan Tourism Agency held a meeting in Tokyo to present the results of the “Regional Tourism New Discovery Project.
The “Regional Tourism New Discovery Project” was implemented by the Agency to support the development of sales channels and information dissemination of tourism contents that utilize regional tourism resources to attract visitors to local areas in a timely and appropriate manner by utilizing marketing data. 719 projects were adopted in FY2024. In the presentation, seven good examples were introduced from among the selected projects.
Mr. Hiroyuki Toyoshige, Director of the New Contents Development Office, Tourism Resources Division, said that in FY2024, the number of foreign visitors to Japan reached a record high of 38 million and the amount spent was 8.1395 trillion yen, but the places where tourists stay tend to be biased toward urban areas, including inbound and domestic tourists. He said that the Japan Tourism Agency believes that it will promote the attraction of tourists to rural areas.
In FY2025, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced that it will launch the “Regional Attractiveness Improvement Project” as the successor to the “New Discovery of Regional Tourism” project. This project will provide comprehensive support for the development of profitable, unique, and novel tourism content utilizing regional resources, as well as for the development of appropriate sales channels and information dissemination.
A briefing session on the Community Attractiveness Improvement Project will be held on February 14, 2012, with advance registration required. The application period is from March 3 to April 18. Subsidies are available to local governments, DMOs, private businesses, and others. The subsidy amount is a fixed amount up to 4 million yen, with a subsidy rate of 50% for the portion exceeding 4 million yen, with a maximum subsidy amount of 12.5 million yen and a minimum project cost of 6 million yen.
