SkyDrive and JR Kyushu announced on February 6 that they have signed a comprehensive collaboration agreement to utilize “flying cars” in Oita Prefecture and to solve regional issues.
Flying cars are an accessible and sustainable next-generation means of air transportation, made possible by aeronautical technologies such as electrification and automation, and modes of operation such as vertical takeoff and landing.
Around FY2028, the company expects to begin operating a sightseeing service in Beppu Bay, an air cab service in Beppu City, and an air cab service connecting Beppu and Yufuin. If the air cab service between Beppu and Yufuin is realized, the current 60 minutes by train and 40 minutes by car will be reduced to 15 minutes.
After 2030, the company envisions expanding the service to include transportation between Yufuin, Kokonoe, Kusu, and Oku-Hita areas, transportation from Oita City to Beppu and Yufuin areas, and providing air cab service from Oita Airport to Beppu City and Oita City. In the future, the company aims to establish a system where fares are comparable to those of existing cabs.
The company will proceed with business studies, including a survey of potential takeoff/landing sites, verification of profitability, and establishment of an operational structure, with the aim of launching services around FY2028.
