JR Tokai and Tokyo Disney Resort will operate the first special Tokaido Shinkansen train “Wonderful Dreams Shinkansen” from February 21 to mid-September. Prior to this, a ceremony was held at JR Tokai’s Hamamatsu Plant on February 17 to unveil the train cars that will be used for the service.
The train cars are designed around the theme of “Fantasy Springs,” the new theme port of Tokyo DisneySea, which opens in June 2024. This is the first special paint job in the 60 years since the Tokaido Shinkansen was introduced, and the entire train expresses the world of “Fantasy Springs”.
The ceremony was attended by Shunsuke Niwa, President and Representative Director of JR Tokai, Kenji Yoshida, President and COO of Oriental Land, Tokyo Disney Resort Ambassador Kazu Midei and Mickey Mouse.
Mr. Niwa of JR Tokai said, “Unlike the usual blue line, this special design expresses the world of Fantasy Springs. As the name ‘Wonderful Dreams Shinkansen’ suggests, passengers will feel as if they are in a dream. We hope that passengers from the Chukyo and Kansai regions will also enjoy the time they spend traveling to Tokyo Disney Resort.
After the ceremony, Atsushi Sakakibara, Executive Officer and General Manager of Sales Division, JR Tokai, and Kaori Yokoi, Oriental Land’s Public Relations Manager, were available for interviews.
Mr. Sakakibara explained that the “Wonderful Dreams Shinkansen” was realized as a result of JR Tokai’s desire for people to travel to the Tokyo area on the Shinkansen and Tokyo Disney Resort’s desire for people to visit Fantasy Springs. More reservations have been made than for regular Shinkansen trains, with the first train on Saturday, February 22, having a reservation rate of over 90%.
The special “Wonderful Dreams Shinkansen” train will operate on the Tokaido Shinkansen between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka, mainly on the Hikari and Kodama trains.
The service is scheduled to begin on February 21 with “Hikari No. 632” departing Nagoya at 6:43 a.m. and arriving in Tokyo at 8:42 a.m. Stops along the way are Toyohashi, Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Shin-Yokohama, and Shinagawa. The special website provides information on the February-March schedule.
