NEXCO East Japan Kanto Branch will open the Tsukuba West Smart Interchange on the Ken-O Expressway (C4), which has been under construction with Tsukuba City in Ibaraki Prefecture, to traffic at 15:00 on March 23.

It is located in Shimana, Tsukuba City, between the Joso IC and Tsukuba Chuo IC. After the opening, the distance between Joso IC and Tsukuba West Smart IC will be approximately 7 km, and the distance between Tsukuba West Smart IC and Tsukuba Chuo IC will be approximately 4 km. In addition, the access time from commercial business sites to the Tsukuba Chuo Interchange will be approximately 6 minutes after the opening, compared to approximately 12 minutes before the opening.

The Tsukuba West Smart IC is available 24 hours a day and is compatible with all vehicles equipped with ETC. The usage mode is a one-stop type. The regular vehicle toll for the main section is 390 yen between Tsukuba West Smart IC and Joso IC, 860 yen between Tsukuba West Smart IC and Ami-Higashi IC, 1,520 yen between Tsukuba West Smart IC and Joban Expressway Misato Main Line toll booth, and 1,700 yen between Tsukuba West Smart IC and Joban Expressway Mito IC.

The project is expected to improve convenience in the western area of Tsukuba City and other areas, avoid traffic congestion on the tour route around Mt. Tsukuba, and speed up relief efforts and emergency supply transportation in the event of a disaster.
