JR Tokai announced that it plans to introduce a new “L0 Series Improved Test Car” for the Linear Central Shinkansen in the summer of 2025. Nippon Sharyo Mfg. will be in charge of design, while Hitachi, Ltd. will be in charge of design and manufacturing.
The number of cars produced is only one intermediate car (M10). Running tests on the Yamanashi Linear Test Line will be conducted in combination with existing L0 series improved test cars (from 2020) and L0 series cars (from 2013).
The new test car is a brushed-up version of the L0 series improved test car. Riblet film with a shark-like structure was applied to the car body surface, and the shape around the bogie was also improved to reduce aerodynamic drag by approximately 1% on a 16-car equivalent basis.
In addition, the cooling system for the superconducting magnet has been changed from a refrigerator and liquid helium to a refrigerator-only design. By designing the vehicle exclusively for high-temperature superconducting magnets, the environmental impact will be reduced and costs will be lowered.
In addition, the vehicle design has been redesigned. The unpainted silver body was given a futuristic look with gold lines that resemble the image of light flowing at high speed. The interior features a white cabin space with serene orange seats.
