Strip Steak Located on the third floor of International Marketplace, this steakhouse is overseen by Chef Michael Mina, who has cooked for three U.S. presidents. Although it gives the impression of an upscale restaurant, this place also offers a happy hour. Pau Hana Tasting is a reasonably priced way to enjoy the creative flavors of the chef, who is particular about the balance of sweet, sour, and other tastes. The course menu is available only from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. and includes a choice of appetizer, main dish, and dessert for $79. The appetizer is a Waipoli mixed green salad made with vegetables grown on Maui, and for the main course, there is a choice of signature steak, jidori chicken, seafood, etc., but “if you’re going to go all out, go for the steak” and choose the prime New York steak, which is selected from farms on the US mainland and has a strong flavor of meat. For dessert, I ordered the basque cheesecake. There are also more casual and unique menu items. The Adult Happy Meal is a bento-style menu with several flavors packed in a stacked box and includes sake for $29. It included pork belly bao buns, ahi (tuna) jalami tempura, bite-sized steak tartar bites, and edamame, a novel menu item for a steakhouse. A la carte dishes such as oysters and shrimp cocktail are also available during happy hour for about $7 to $20. A lilikoi mai tai or an island old fashioned ($10 each) would be a good choice to nibble on. It should be a comfortable happy hour on the terrace.
Vein If you love pasta, head to one of the restaurants with “Pasta Hour” for a great deal on handmade Hawaiian pasta. Located in the Salt commercial complex in Kakaako, a town that never stops changing and evolving, the menu is full of unique pasta dishes that are full of imagination and creativity. During Pasta Hour from 4:30pm to 6pm, pasta is discounted by 18%. The pastas are made with homemade pasta and creative sauces that skillfully combine European techniques and Asian ingredients. The menu changes with seasonal ingredients, but one of the most surprising and delicious was the pistou (usually $26). It was interesting to see the orecchiette, a basil short pasta with pistachios and mint lightly accented with beef prosciutto on top. Polpete (usually $28.50) was boldly topped with Wagyu beef meatballs, and pumpkin linguine (usually $25), with a béchamel sauce and a hint of citrus, was topped with crispy fried pumpkin slices. Both had the stickiness that only homemade pasta can have, and the sauces were well mixed. Daily drink specials are available for $6 for a beer and $8 for a glass of wine (red or white). The atmosphere of Kakaako is different from that of Waikiki, and we enjoyed our pasta and a light drink while feeling the wind in the air! Why don’t you spend your evening like that?
