A trip to Jeollanam-do (South Jeolla Province), Southwest Korea. Introducing Mokpo and Haenam’s gourmet food and historical sights.

The round trip takes about 40 minutes! Mokpo Marine Cable Car, the longest cable car in Korea Mokpo, a major tourist city in Jeollanam-do Province, is a port town located between the West Sea and the South Sea in Korea. We took a ride on the Mokpo Sea Cable Car, which offers a panoramic view of the spectacular scenery of the sea. This Mokpo Marine Cable Car is the longest cable car in Korea at 3.23 km long, and there is a Yuldalsan Station between the starting point, Bukgang Station, and the goal, Gohakdo Station, where you can get off only on the return trip. The scenery that changes from the city to the mountain, from the mountain to the sea, and from the sea to the island is breathtaking. The most impressive feature is its height: Tower 5, one of the pillars of the cable car, is said to be the second tallest in the world. You should definitely try the thrill of riding in the Crystal Cabin! It is quite scary.

Mokpo’s seafood galbi jjim has a superb spicy taste! I also tried Hong-o, a delicacy with a strong ammonia smell. Located near the sea, Mokpo is a popular gourmet destination for seafood such as octopus, blue crab, and sea urchin. At The Laksik Hyang 950, I tried the seafood rib chim with abalone, shrimp, and octopus. Chim is a steamed dish of meat, fish, or shellfish marinated in sauce or broth. How can it not be delicious with these ingredients? The seafood galbi jjim is not as spicy as it looks, and is a deliciously spicy hot pot that makes drinks (especially makgeolli) go down a treat. The dish that goes well with makgeolli is the “sea meat samhap possum,” a dish of boiled pork, hon-o (ganguei ray), and kimchi served on a plate. Hong-o is a Korean delicacy made from fermented Ganguei ray, and it is a very different taste from other Korean delicacies, but I was totally fine with it with Makgeolli! It is said that the popular way to eat Hong-o in Mokpo is to put all three together in your mouth. If you encounter Hong O in Korea, you should definitely give it a try!
