Located just west of Ueno Station, Ueno Onshi Koen is a large urban park with museums, art galleries, the Ueno Zoo, and Shinobazu Pond, and was given its name “Ueno Onshi Koen” (commonly known as Ueno Park) in 1924 as a gift from the Imperial Household Ministry to Tokyo City.
The area is also famous for its cherry blossoms, which draw large crowds every year during the cherry blossom season and are covered in the news. Shinobazuno Pond is famous for its lotus trees, but it is also lined with cherry trees. It is also home to a large number of waterfowl, and it is recommended to walk around the pond observing them as well as the cherry blossoms.
Stations such as JR Ueno Station, Keisei Ueno Station, Ginza Line Ueno Station, and Hirokoji Station are located near the park for convenient access. Paid parking is available nearby, but the surrounding streets are crowded, so it is probably safer to take the train.
It is best to go early in the morning, especially during the cherry blossom season, as it gets crowded. Also, since the park is lit up, I would like to see the cherry blossoms at night this year. The official website of Ueno Onshi Park has information on when the cherry blossoms are at their best and when they are lit up, so it would be a good idea to check before you go.
