Weekend Ekiben] Hakata Station “PIKMIN x JR Kyushu Limited Edition Lunch Box

Posted on 2025-02-282025-03-31 by Editor in Chief

The “PIKMIN x JR Kyushu – Explore the Enchanted Planet of Kyushyu” project is a tie-up between JR Kyushu and Nintendo to search for and enjoy the delicious foods and beautiful scenery of Kyushu. The “PIKMIN x JR Kyushu Limited Edition Bento” introduced here is an ekiben that was created from this project that started on December 7, 2024 throughout Kyushu.

When you open the cute package with Nintendo’s game character, Pikmin, you will see spicy cod roe on a bed of rice topped with Bungo beef sukiyaki and broiled egg. The spicy cod roe is made from Hakata’s famous Yamaya spicy cod roe, and although it is tangy, it is somehow mellow.

The Bungo beef has a good balance between the solid undercooked flavor of the beef and the umami of the beef, and is delicious enough to be the star of the show on its own. The broiled egg has a moderate sweetness. The balance of these three flavors is quite good, and this alone is enough to make an ekiben.

For side dishes, the creamy coquille gratin with scallops and the fried chicken cheese and shiso leaf rolls, which are full of meatiness while the cheese makes a strong statement, are satisfying in both taste and volume. The less sweet fried pumpkin and fries are hunky-dory, while the carrot stew is of the quite sweet type. The potato salad is surprisingly refreshing with a hint of mayonnaise and crunchy cucumber flavor.

The yuzu daikon radish looks and tastes very refreshing, and is more than just a chopstick rest in this bento that includes a variety of well-flavored side dishes. The sweet potato nandemonimo (sweetened sweet potato stew) is sweet, but the flavor of the ingredients is very strong, so it is both a side dish and a dessert.

The bento as a whole is a collection of dishes and ingredients from the northern and southern regions of Kyushu, each of which has its own unique characteristics and seems to fit the purpose of this project perfectly. This bento is only available until the end of June, and is sold at two limited locations: the Ekibento NPM outlet at Hakata Station and the Ekibento Chikushi outlet at Chikushiguchi Station.

The “PIKMIN x JR Kyushu – Explore the Enchanted Planet of Kyushyu” project will run until June 30, and during this period, wrapped trains will be operated and various events will be held at JR stations throughout Kyushu. The rarity of the ekiben, which can only be consumed by those who visit the area during such a period, is also a characteristic of the original ekiben.
