On March 4, JR East announced that it will start designing the next Tohoku Shinkansen train, which will succeed the E2 and E5 Series Shinkansen trains. The new train will have a maximum operating speed of 320 km/h and 10 cars, and is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2027.
The next Tohoku Shinkansen trains will offer “TRAIN DESK” reserved seats in ordinary cars, which allow passengers to work or study in the train, with a more spacious seating arrangement (2 rows + 2 rows), a larger luggage storage area, power outlets in all seats, and wheelchair spaces where passengers can enjoy the train windows from their wheelchairs. The new seats will also include a larger luggage compartment, power outlets in all seats, and a wheelchair space for passengers to enjoy the car window while in a wheelchair.
Car 5 is equipped with a luggage transport door that facilitates loading and unloading of luggage, enhancing the flexibility of the Hakobyun luggage transport service using the Shinkansen bullet train.
The exterior design is based on the coloring of green, reminiscent of the mountains of the Tohoku region, and features a color scheme inspired by the nature of the various regions along the line, with the light green at the top being “Tsugaru green” and the dark green at the bottom being “Evening elm.
The lines along the side of the carbody are based on the Japanese motif of cherry blossom petals, expressing a new image of the Shinkansen. The designers have chosen the British firm tangerine, the first overseas design firm for the company’s rolling stock.
