Some of these lodging facilities are now offering “train view” as a selling point. There are also a number of websites that introduce hotels with train views. In particular, hotels operated by railroad operator groups or station building management companies are inevitably located in or near train stations. This is because it is not uncommon for railroad operators to open hotels on a portion of railroad land. In fact, there have been a number of places where I have stayed where the guest rooms have a train view. Even if the guest rooms do not have a train view, the station or the tracks can be seen from the windows at the end of the corridor or in the elevator hall. However, in most cases, the corridor is located in the center of the building, with rooms on both sides of the corridor, so whether or not you get a train view depends on which side of the corridor you are assigned a room. This is why there are even “train-view-guaranteed lodging plans” that are offered.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Train-view Rooms From the viewpoint of a train lover, looking out of a room window is like seeing a live model train in motion, and this is quite enjoyable. This is the only advantage of train-view rooms. And as mentioned above, most accommodations with train views are located close to train stations. If you have to take a bus or cab to the station, you will need more time to get there, but if you are within walking distance from the station, you will have more mobility. This is one of the reasons why I usually stay at business hotels in front of or near train stations. However, there are times when it is not only fun to see a train running ……. The fact that trains are running means, of course, that they emit sound when they do so. I have actually had the experience of being awakened at night by the sound of a passing train while I was sleeping. However, this kind of story depends on how well soundproofed the area around the windows is. It is a good thing if the windows are well soundproofed. On JR main lines, freight trains play a major role at night. Freight trains are long and make a lot of noise when they are running. If a freight train passes close to the guest room where you are sleeping, it may wake some people up. On the other hand, most private railway companies do not operate trains at night, as is the case on local JR lines. Shinkansen trains also do not operate at night. Unlike conventional lines, however, the Shinkansen line is operated at night for inspection and maintenance work on the tracks, various facilities and equipment, and for various construction projects. In particular, the machines used for track maintenance are not always quiet. The author happened to cover the nighttime maintenance of the Shinkansen several times, and thought to himself, “People living nearby might be bothered by such noise. However, for those who like maintenance vehicles, they may not want to lose sleep to see maintenance vehicles at work. That is one of the advantages of the train view.
