Osaka Metro (Osaka City Rapid Transit) will start offering a walk-through face recognition ticket gate service on March 25.
Facial recognition ticket gates compatible with the service are installed at 130 of the 134 stations. By registering a facial image with the Osaka Metro “e METRO” smartphone application and linking the registered information with a digital ticket purchased with the application, passengers can pass through the ticket gate without touching their ticket to the ticket gate.
However, the 23 ticket gates at New Tram Port Town West Station, Nanko Higashi Station, Nanko Guchi Station, Hirabayashi Station, and other stations are not covered. At stations and ticket gates without face recognition turnstiles, passengers must hold the QR code of their digital ticket over the turnstile reader.
The range of the face recognition camera is within approximately 30 cm in front of and behind the ticket gate. Although the camera is always in operation, it does not record or store the captured data on a server.
Osaka Metro has been introducing cashless and ticketless ticket gates in preparation for the Osaka-Kansai Expo to be held from April 13, and has been installing face recognition ticket gate machines at each station since November 2023.
With the introduction of this service, passengers will henceforth be able to board using four patterns: “transportation system IC cards,” “digital tickets using QR codes,” “touch payments such as credit cards,” and “facial recognition.
