On March 12, JICA President Akihiko Tanaka met with Jakaya Mulisho Kikwete, former President of Tanzania and Chairman of the Board of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), the world’s largest international trust fund for educational cooperation in developing countries. Mr. Jakaya Mulisho Kikwete, former President of Tanzania and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), the world’s largest international trust fund for education cooperation with developing countries, met with JICA at its headquarters.

President Tanaka expressed his pleasure at seeing Chairman Kikwete again for the first time since his tenure as President, and thanked him for his leadership during his presidency and his cooperation in working with JICA. He also introduced JICA’s efforts in the field of basic education, noting JICA’s certification as a Grant Agent* of GPE in December 2024, and expressed his desire to further deepen cooperation with GPE.

In response, Chairman Kikwete congratulated GPE on the Grant Agent certification and expressed his hope for further collaboration between GPE and JICA.

Furthermore, President Tanaka and Chair Kikwete agreed to cooperate for the 9th African Development Conference to be held in August this year.

The Grant Agent is a fund management organization that manages and executes GPE funds, and provides technical and operational support for education reforms that ministries of education are trying to promote using GPE funds, as a link between ministries of education and the GPE.
