The launch ceremony of the second “Mock AU” organized by the Mock AU Executive Committee (a voluntary student organization) and co-organized by JICA, UNDP and Sophia University was held on March 3 at Sophia University. More than 100 people participated in the ceremony, both in person and online. The handover from the first Mock AU Executive Committee to the second Mock AU Executive Committee and the recruitment of participants for the second Mock AU to be held during TICAD 9 in August this year were called for.
In August 2024, Japan hosted its first mock African Union conference. This pioneering initiative aims to empower Japanese youth to lead discussions on sustainable development and partnerships among African countries.

The launch ceremony was attended by Akira Murakami, Counselor, Africa Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Afuna Ezakonwa, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Director-General for Africa, Yoshiaki Yodo, President of Sophia University, and Toshiyuki Nakamura, Special Assistant to the President of JICA. Ms. Ezakonwa, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Director, Africa Bureau, said, “I was impressed by the passion of the young people who spoke today. Looking at the world, there are many wars and conflicts, but dialogue is necessary to promote peace. I am looking forward to the next event in August.
Afterwards, Mr. Hideyuki Ohno, Chairperson of the Mock AU First Executive Committee, delivered a congratulatory message, and Mr. Taiga Nakajima and Ms. Gloria Kamwezi, Mock AU Second Executive Committee members, gave an overview of the second Mock African Union, and called for participants to join the event for the main event in August.

About Mock AU
Mock AU is organized by the Mock AU Executive Committee and co-sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Sophia University, with the aim of providing opportunities for university students from Africa and Japan to think deeply about African countries and formulate policies in preparation for TICAD 9 this year. In a setting modeled after the AU General Assembly, the decision-making body of the African Union, the following three technical committees will be established

Each team will work for several months to develop a Position Paper from their country’s perspective in preparation for the General Assembly. Finally, the AU General Assembly will close with the adoption of a Mock AU Resolution, which will unify the recommendations of each subcommittee.
