JAL to introduce a total of 38 737-8s on domestic routes from FY2026; ZIPAIR to introduce 787-9 with additional full-flat seats

Posted on 2025-03-192025-04-16 by Editor in Chief

On March 19, JAL announced its medium-term management plan Rolling Plan 2025 for fiscal years 2021-2025.

The EBIT (Earnings Before Interest and Taxes) forecast for FY2024 is 170 billion yen, as initially projected, and for FY2025, as announced in March 2024, the company aims for 200 billion yen by capturing overseas demand, improving domestic earnings, and expanding the Mile-Life Infrastructure business. The company is aiming for 200 billion yen in FY2025, as announced in March 2024.

In the full-service carrier domain, JAL is targeting 130 billion yen (4% average annual growth rate) by expanding the scale of medium- and long-haul routes and utilizing dedicated cargo aircraft, in addition to the aforementioned efforts to meet overseas demand and improve earnings on domestic routes. In the LCC domain, the company aims to achieve 30 billion yen (16% year-on-year growth) by expanding the scale of international flights, and 70 billion yen (3% year-on-year growth) in the mileage, lifestyle, and infrastructure domain by expanding its customer base through the expansion of partners and other measures.

From the standpoint of an airline that transports both people and goods, the airline will address new business from the standpoint of social issues such as “preservation of the environment and biodiversity,” “revitalization of local economies,” and “improvement of people’s happiness,” and will strengthen initiatives such as the “‘OLU’OLU! Honolulu” that was held in Hawaii in early March. Specific details of the project will be materialized in FY2025 and beyond.

On the same day, the company also announced the introduction of 17 additional Boeing 737-8 aircraft for domestic routes, bringing the total to 38, including the 21 aircraft on firm order in March 2023. The 737-8s will be introduced as a replacement for the existing 737-800 fleet, and together with 11 Airbus A321neo aircraft, which will be introduced in fiscal 2028 as a replacement for the 767 fleet, the airline will continue to renew its domestic route fleet.

ZIPAIR Tokyo, the group’s medium- to long-haul LCC, will introduce about 10 Boeing 787-9 aircraft from FY2027 onward by transferring aircraft from JAL, and will add full-flat seats. ZIPAIR is planning to double its fleet of 787-8 aircraft to a total of approximately 20 aircraft by 2026.
