Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street” by Mr. Niwa, a hotel staff member who knows the local attractions.

IHG Hotels & Resorts operates 19 hotel brands with more than 6,600 hotels in over 100 countries. In Japan, IHG Hotels & Resorts currently operates approximately 52 hotels under 9 brands from Hokkaido to Okinawa (as of December 2024). For this interview, we asked Hideyuki Niwa, general manager of Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street, about the attractions around the hotel.

Name: Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street

Location: 12-17 Minamiyamate-cho, Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture

–How did you come to work at Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street?

While working as a hotel manager at a luxury hotel in Arashiyama, Kyoto, I became involved in the launch of the Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street, which was a new opening project within the company. It was during that time that I was attracted to Nagasaki’s diverse cultural and historical attractions. I have been working as a hotelier for about 20 years, and one of my goals was to become the general manager, so I am very honored to be appointed as the first general manager of this hotel.

–What kind of hotel is it?

Just as no two cities in the world are alike, no two hotels are alike at Hotel Indigo, a lifestyle boutique hotel that illuminates the character of the city.

Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street is a historic building completed in 1898 in the exotic town of Minamiyamate, Nagasaki, which has been given a new lease of life and reborn as a hotel. The design and artwork throughout the hotel is in keeping with Nagasaki’s Japanese, Chinese, and Dutch culture, creating an experience like “saruku” (wandering through time and space in Nagasaki dialect).

–What is the unique experience of Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street?

With a Neighborhood Map in hand, you can “saruku” around Nagasaki City, which is also known as the “City of Slopes,” and encounter a blend of all kinds of unique scenery.

The hotel’s interior is also inspired by the alleys of Nagasaki, with the lobby area inspired by the social gatherings of merchants in the past and the cathedral restaurant with its impressive stained-glass windows.

–please let me know if you have any personal favorites tourist spots or restaurants in the vicinity of the hotel.

Nagasaki is famous for its chanpon, and Shikairou, known as the Mecca of chanpon, is so popular that there is a long line of people waiting in line every day. Shikairou is also the birthplace of Sara Udon, a dish that will take you back in time to the flavor of that era, so be sure to give it a try.

–What restaurant menu do you recommend?

We recommend the signature dinner course “Blanche” at Restaurant Catedrekla with its sparkling stained glass windows. The dinner course combines ingredients from the Neighborhood with Nagasaki’s DNA of Japanese, Chinese, and Dutch culture, and the chef’s playful and creative “twist”.

–What souvenirs do you recommend?

Castella is one of Nagasaki’s most popular souvenirs, and we recommend the Holland Cake sold by Fukusunaya, a long-established sponge cake maker. The traditional taste of sponge cake and the mellow flavor created by aromatic high-quality cocoa, walnuts, and raisins are very popular.
