The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the government of the Republic of Uganda for the “Karma Bridge Replacement Project” in Kampala, the capital of the Republic of Uganda, on March 25.

Business Objectives
This project will replace the Karma Bridge, which is located on the border between Kiryandongo and Nuwoya districts, to facilitate traffic and ensure safety on this section, thereby contributing to the facilitation of logistics and traffic in the Northern East Africa Corridor and the Northern region (Acholi and West Nile regions).

(a) Details of civil engineering work, procured equipment, etc.
Karma Bridge (1 lane in each direction, approx. 240 m), attached road (approx. 1.5 km)
(b) Consulting services/software component details
Detailed design, bidding assistance, construction supervision/technical guidance on environmental monitoring methods
Maximum Amount of Provision
4,939 million yen
Scheduled implementation period
60 months (including detailed design and bidding period)
The project will be completed when the bridge is put into service.
