I visited “TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY” which opened today.

Posted on 2025-03-272025-04-24 by Editor in Chief

On March 27, JR East opened “TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY,” a new town adjacent to Takanawa Gateway Station. In this pre-opening opening, part of the NORTH/SOUTH building of THE LINKPILLAR 1, the twin tower closest to the station, and the south exit of Takanawa Gateway Station will be available for use. THE LINKPILLAR 1 will feature high-grade offices on the middle and upper floors, and commercial facilities and a multipurpose hall on the lower floors and basement. Notably, KDDI will relocate its headquarters to the NORTH building, and the JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo (scheduled to open in the fall of 2025) will occupy the upper floors of the SOUTH building. The commercial facilities of approximately 170 stores in the NORTH/SOUTH building and 10 stores in THE LINKPILLAR 2 are scheduled to open in the fall of 2025.

Touch Trigger” function of the city application that uses Suica’s admission judgment. The “TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY App” is one of them. By registering as a user of the city, you can use various functions on your smartphone, such as providing information that matches your preferences, viewing floor maps that plot facility contents and services, and placing mobile orders at tenant restaurants. The system will be able to be used with smartphones. Touch Trigger,” which is linked to Suica, is another function that is likely to play an active role in the future, and is expected to be used for such purposes as receiving information on stores when exiting a ticket gate or using as an admission ticket to an event. As part of the campaign to coincide with the opening of the city, users who use the touch-trigger function at Takanawa Gateway Station between March 27 and 30 will receive a coffee drip bag with original TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY specifications, which will be sold at the Gateway Park Market. The gift bag will be sold at the Gateway Park Market.

Experience self-driving mobility vehicles in the station plaza. Here, visitors can ride on a self-driving mobility vehicle that travels between the NORTH and SOUTH buildings at speeds of up to 4 km/h. The vehicle automatically starts moving when you step on the steps. If you want to get off the train midway, just hold your hand over the “slow” sign and the train will slow down. When we tried it out, it was about the same speed as walking, so it did not feel very fast, but it was very comfortable since you are just holding on to it. When I asked the staff if the speed could be increased, they told me that the maximum speed can be increased up to 5 km/h, but they set the speed at this level because some people said it was “scary.

The “100 Colors Path,” a work of art representing the city, is displayed in the center of Gateway Park, a colorful artwork “100 Colors Path” that can be recognized from a distance. It is the 53rd work in the 100 colors installation series by Emmanuel Mouhot, a French architect and designer living in Tokyo. The columns in the front are labeled “2025” and those at the far end “2124,” representing the city that looks 100 years into the future in gradations of 100 colors, just like the changing of the times. The “100 Colors” artwork also includes the “100 Colors” artwork. In addition, AR contents are also available in conjunction with the artwork “100 Colored Roads,” which uses AR technology to reproduce a scene in which the entire city is colored in 100 colors.

Recreate Takanawa Chikuttei in AR Past Gateway Park and toward Route 15, there is a place where visitors can experience the augmented reality (AR) content “TAKANAWA LINK SCAPE”. 150 years ago, this area where TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY was built was a shallow bay in Tokyo Bay. When Japan’s first railroad was built, a levee called “Takanawa Chikki-tei” was constructed to lay the tracks. After construction began, these remains were found, and it was decided that it would be difficult to preserve all of them (some of them are preserved as a park). To give visitors an idea of the atmosphere of the time, AR allows them to view the scenery where steam locomotives ran using a smartphone or other device. The planted enclosure along this pathway is made of excavated stone walls, and on the pathway, rails are laid on the route where the trains ran in those days.

Two commercial facilities will open for business in conjunction with the opening of the new town hall. Blue Bottle Coffee will be located in the entrance hall on the second floor of the SOUTH building. The commercial area of TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY will be called “Newman Takanawa.

On the first floor of the SOUTH building of THE LINKPILLAR 1, JR East’s new tourism information dissemination base, “TAKANAWA GATEWAY Travel Service Center” will open, using the latest technology by JR East to disseminate tourism information. A large touch-type digital signage in the facility introduces 70 sightseeing spots in JR East’s service area. The center also introduces sightseeing spots in the Tohoku region using virtual reality (VR) goggles. At the counter, a translation panel in 13 languages is available for tourist information and ticketing services (currently only credit card payment is available).

The “Future Experience Theater,” which presents the future of the city in a lighthearted animated film The “Future Experience Theater,” which can be experienced free of charge, is located on the second basement floor where the convention hall is located. The contents of the theater are animations depicting the future of TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY from its grand opening to the future, and can be experienced on a large dome-shaped screen with a 7-minute video. The music used in the video was written by the alternative rock band “Sheep Literature” for this theater.

Night Museum Bar & Club for 120 days only On the side of the SOUTH building, the NIGHT MUSEUM & BAR “ZERO-SITE Takanawa Gateway” will be open for 4 months only, until July 31. The 2nd floor is equipped with a sound system by “VOID ACOUSTICS,” which is highly supported by top DJs for its clear sound quality, and the 3rd floor is equipped with a sound system by “DANLEY SOUND LABS,” which is the first to be launched in Japan, featuring high resolution and an innovative new mechanism. The third floor features a sound system by “DANLEY SOUND LABS,” the first of its kind in Japan. Limited original cocktails and bar food using plant-based food can be enjoyed.
