On April 1, Iwatani Giken, a space development venture company, decided to name the world’s first commercial balloon-borne space flight “Kazabune.
The company is sponsoring the “OPEN UNIVERSE PROJECT,” which aims to realize a space cruise that anyone can enjoy using balloons. As part of the “OPEN UNIVERSE Challenge,” the company was seeking names for its first commercial aircraft from January 16 to March 9.
Thirty-six companies and organizations cooperated in the application project as “Space Tour Support Groups,” and a total of 4,983 proposals were received in about two months. As a result of the selection process, “KAZABUCHI” was selected.
Ryo, the originator of the idea, said that he learned that the word “balloon” is derived from the Dutch word “balloon,” and that he wanted to convey to people that a balloon is a flying vehicle that is large enough to carry a person. The name will be printed on the cabin of the first aircraft to be launched as the official name of the balloon, and will also be used to convey information at various PR events.
The KAZABUCHI is scheduled to be launched in June or later, and if realized, it will be the world’s first commercial flight into the stratosphere by a balloon.
