The Japan Association for the International Exposition, 2025, has posted information on its official website regarding the current situation (as of May 27) and future countermeasures regarding the large number of insects flying into the “Osaka-Kansai Expo” site.
The insects flying in large numbers in the venue are “Psittacidae,” a member of the Chironomidae family. Although Pseudochrysidium generally occurs in brackish water areas where freshwater and seawater mix, the exact source of the insects in the venue is being investigated in cooperation with several businesses.
On May 26, a “Task Force on Chironomidae” was established.
Chironomids are particularly abundant during the evening and night hours on the large roof ring (skywalk) on the south side of the venue and in the waterfront areas to the east and west of the ring. Although the locations where they fly vary depending on weather conditions, there have been no reports of Zyosyphus carrying infectious diseases, and they do not sting people.
Dainippon Pyrethrum (KINCHO) explains the ecology and types of chironomids on its official website and official NOTE. The company is currently offering goods in collaboration with the JR West Japan Group at its official store West Gate in the venue.
