President Tanaka Visits Moldova | News & PR

JICA President Akihiko Tanaka visited the Republic of Moldova from May 26 to 28 to meet with President Maia Sandu and other government officials and inspect JICA projects.

During his meeting with President Sandu, President Tanaka expressed his commitment to continue to cooperate with Moldova’s sustainable economic development and improvement of the living standards of its people, and to support reforms aimed at building a resilient society and economy. President Sandu expressed his appreciation for JICA’s contributions over the years, including in the areas of healthcare and agriculture, and they exchanged views on the direction of Moldova’s development.

President Tanaka also met with Prime Minister Recep Tayan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Popshoi, Minister of Finance Belous, and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization Nistor, and exchanged views on the importance of social and economic reforms and a fair and free press, and JICA’s efforts in Moldova in these areas. During his stay in Moldova, President Tanaka also visited the National Maternal and Child Health Center to inspect the equipment that was provided in February 2025 through the Grant Assistance for Strengthening the Health Care System. During his visit, President Tanaka met with Minister of Health Nemerenko, who introduced JICA’s efforts in the health sector in Moldova, expressed his sympathy for the effectiveness of the health sector reform that the Minister is promoting, and expressed his hope that the equipment will be effectively utilized in the future.

Hospital Visits

They also visited the Civil Protection and Emergency Services Agency of the Ministry of Interior and observed a demonstration training using a fire pump truck with a water tank, which was provided through the Grant Aid “Fire Fighting Equipment Improvement Program”. President Tanaka confirmed that the provided equipment is contributing to the improvement of firefighting and rescue capabilities. He also mentioned the importance of human resource development for firefighters, and together with Interior Minister Missile Nikitin, encouraged the firefighters who are training daily.

JICA will continue to provide a wide range of cooperation to contribute to the development of the economic and social infrastructure of Moldova as a whole.
