Although there are some “pet-friendly accommodations” in prominent tourist destinations, the number is not yet large. In addition, it is sometimes difficult to make reservations at popular tourist destinations, even when pet-friendly facilities are available. For this reason, a style of car travel that allows people traveling with their pets (pet dogs) to sleep in the car with their dogs has taken root, and RV parks have been chosen as places to stay for such trips.
This time we visited the newly opened “RV Park DOG KENNEL” (744-1, Mimono, Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture) in Tateyama City at the tip of the Boso Peninsula. As the name suggests, this is a facility that can be used together with your dog.
According to the official website, the opening is scheduled for May 2025, but in fact there are still some parts of the facility that are under construction, but since we were covering this event, we were allowed to use some parts of the facility in its unfinished state.
The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of June, so the car will be available in its original condition from July. Reservations are already being accepted, so those planning a summer vacation trip in a car should make their reservations now. Incidentally, Dog Kennel is a facility of the company that operates the popular Sawan Hoshifuru Campsite in Chiba.
The dog kennels have 12 sites, which are divided into two types of construction. The site used for the interview was a site with a concrete paved road surface, and six of these sites are available.
Concrete sites have a flat surface, so there is no leaning of the vehicle, so those who are concerned about the leaning of the vehicle when sleeping are advised to choose this site. However, you cannot peg your car to the ground (only two sites have a dirt surface), so if you want to put up a tarp, etc., you should choose a dirt site.
There are also six unpaved sites, all on “dirt” ground, so pegging is easy, but even though the ground is cleared, there is some slope. Therefore, if you are concerned about the tilt of your vehicle when spending time in your car, you may want to prepare a height-adjustment plate to place under your tires. The usage of this area is the same as that of a general auto camp site.
Let me now introduce each site individually. In the dog kennels, there are two types of sites: concrete-lined sites with doors at the entrances and dirt ground sites with open entrances.
All sites can be used for overnight stays in cars as well as for tents, but if tents are to be pitched, sites with dirt ground will be easier to set up.
All sites are open to motorcycles and bicycles, so they can be used for overnight stays during touring. In such cases, tents will be required, but there is a campground at the Dog Kennel’s affiliated facility, and camping equipment will be available for rent. With this service, even motorcyclists and bicyclists who cannot carry much with them will be able to enjoy a fully equipped camping experience.
Site fees range from 4,000 yen to 6,000 yen per night, depending on the size of the site. This fee includes the use of a power source and garbage disposal. In addition, visitors can freely use the showers in the administration building and are allowed to use the dog run, so the fees are reasonable.
Check-in time is from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and check-out time is by 11:00 a.m. Other detailed rules and regulations have not yet been set, but the lights-out time at night and the morning activity time (the time when the dog run use starts) will be set in the future, so please confirm them at the time of reservation.
This was formerly a glamping facility, and the salon-like building that was used then is used as the administration building. The room is a shared space, with a shower booth at the back of the room. However, many remnants of the former salon still remain, and a billiard table has been placed in the hall. This seems to be fun, but since it is a shared space used by many people, the company is currently considering how to use the billiard table.
There are three shower booths in the administration building, and both the changing rooms and shower booths are new and clean. The changing rooms can be locked from the inside and are equipped with mirrors and hair dryers. The shower booths have overhead showers.
In addition, the kitchen space remains intact, and water and gas are available. There is also a refrigerator and freezer, which can also be used. There was only one toilet in the administration building, but it will be expanded since it is clearly insufficient for the number of sites.
